In the old days of fashion, wearing white after Labor Day was a big mistake. The rule originated from back when wealthy people would put away their airy white linens after summer vacation, trading them in for more appropriate fall clothing as they headed back to life in the city, a tradition that was was later adopted by fashion sticklers.
With Labor Day signifying the unofficial end of summer, there is some credence in leaning more towards fall attire, but blindly following obscure fashion regulations is completely unnecessary — and color should never be a restriction. After all, black was once only worn for mourning.
Even though you should probably be putting away your linen shirts and tank tops, consider this formal permission to wear as much white as you want through the fall and winter. To help you break away from the rule, we rounded up 12 pieces of white clothing to wear after Labor Day. With everything from long sleeve flannels and hoodies to denim jackets and bombers, there are plenty of fall-appropriate pieces.
